● orcinol nom masculin ou orcine nom féminin Dérivé dihydroxylé du méthylbenzène. (Présent dans de nombreux lichens, il a des propriétés voisines de celles du résorcinol.)

CHIM. Diphénol dérivé du toluène, de formule CH3-C6H3 (OH)2. [L'orcéine est] synthétisée à partir de l'orcine et de l'ammoniac (Méd. Biol. t.3 1972, s.v. orcéine). L'orcine prend naissance par la décomposition de l'acide orsellique (WURTZ, Dict. chim., t.2, 1er vol., 1873, p.644). On utilise couramment la réaction des pentoses avec l'orcinol (Mejbaum, 1939) pour le dosage des ARN [acides ribonucléiques] (PRIVAT DE GARILHE, Acides nucl., 1963, p.52).

COTTEZ, s.v. ors-). II dér. de orcine, suff. -ol. Cf. angl. orcinol (1892 ds NED).
